The original bid for the Bishop Heelan High School gymnasium was $1 million more than the initial budget and would not close in time due to masonry labor shortages. Speed and cost were critical to this job, so the team sought alternative building methods.
TREMtilt™ insulated concrete sandwich panels emerged as the dominant solution, combining the speed of tilt-up concrete construction with energy efficiency. The fully insulated gym would save the school significantly on their annual heating and cooling costs. Plus, the process to cast the concrete panels on-site and erect the walls took only 15 days!
LiteFill Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) fill was used across other areas of the school’s construction for its retaining walls and foundations to prevent soil settlement, ensure stability and add thermal insulation.
The Bishop Heelan High School also won the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s 2019 Excellence in Concrete Award in the Above-Grade Buildings category.
