  • Sacred Heart Medical Center

Sacred Heart Medical Center
Springfield, OR

CHALLENGE:

The original Sacred Heart Medical Center campus in Eugene, Oregon, was nearly outgrown when Peace Health, the owner, broke ground in nearby Springfield. On 181 acres lies the new Sacred Heart Medical Centerat River Bend campus which includes a comprehensive regional medical center and Level II trauma center, the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute, and two medical office buildings attached to the main hospital by sky bridges. When the campus is complete, it will be the largest hospital in Oregon.

A sheet membrane was the contractor’s preferred method for waterproofing under slab. Since the sheet membrane could be applied directly to the dirt, the contractor could save a significant amount of time by not having to wait for a concrete slab to be poured and then to cure before applying a fluid membrane. Inclement weather could have created a real problem for Snyder Roofing LLC of Oregon if they couldn’t find a way to protect the waterproofing sheet membrane’s bentonite from getting wet when they were waterproofing the footings under slab of the main hospital. It was several days between the installation of the waterproofing membrane and the installation of the covered slab. During the winter months in Oregon there is a lot of moisture and the contractor couldn’t take a chance on the bentonite getting wet and expanding.

SOLUTION:

Paraseal® LG Waterproofing Sheet Membrane contains a self-sealing, expandable layer of granular bentonite laminated at the rate of up to one pound per square foot on one side and an impermeable, high density, 20-mil polyethylene (HDPE) on the other side, with a protective layer of spun polypropylene over the bentonite. These three components form a tough, high-performance waterproofing membrane. Because of this unique formulation, the contractor was able to flip the Paraseal LG over so that the HDPE side was facing up, protecting the bentonite from any moisture.

Compatible, seamless transitions are critical in a successful waterproofing job. Paraseal Waterproofing Membrane was used to waterproof all of the below-grade vertical walls, and TREMproof® 201/60 Waterproofing Membrane was used on the above-grade cavity walls. Superstop Waterstop Material was installed in the cold joints. TREMproof 150HRA (Hot Rubberized Asphalt), TREMDrain® 2000 and TREMDrain GR Drainage and Protection Boards were installed on all plazas on the fourth floor and fifth and sixth level green roofs. Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing was able to provide the owner with a “Single Source” warranty with compatible transitions from Paraseal to TREMproof 201/60 and Paraseal to TREMproof 150HRA to ensure a continuous building envelope solution.

THE TREMCO SOLUTION:

Paraseal LG Multiple Component Sheet Membrane Waterproofing System, consisting of a self-sealing, expandable layer of granular bentonite, laminated at the rate of up to one pound per square foot to an impermeable,high-density polypropylene (HDPE). A third component is a protective layer of spun polypropylene.

Paraseal HDPE/Bentonite Sheet Membrane Dual Waterproofing System, a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and expandable, quality granular bentonite.

TREMproof 201/60 Fluid-Applied, Elastomeric, Coal-Tar Free Waterproofing Membrane, a one-part, moisture-curing elastomer for horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Superstop Resealable Waterstop Material, a multiple composite waterstop which combines the strength and toughness of conventional waterstop with the self-sealing ability of bentonite.

TREMproof 150 HRA Hot Rubberized Asphalt, a one-part, 100% solids, hot-applied, rubberized asphalt waterproofing membrane.

TREMDrain 2000 and TREMDrain GR Drainage and Protection Board, a prefabricated drainage/protection materials designed for vertical and horizontal installations requiring high compression strength and high flow capacity.
