Rush University Medical Center
As part of the Rush Transformation, an initiative announced in 2006 to build new facilities on the Chicago university’s campus, a 15-story, state-of-the-art medical center is currently being built. And Tremco’s product solutions have played a vital part in the building’s construction.
One of the most fascinating things about this building is its truly distinctive design. Yet, this is also one of the most challenging aspects when it came to finding an air barrier that would support the unique stacking joints that comprised the building. The building’s aggressive design couldn’t pass standard chamber tests with traditional peel-and-stick transition membranes. After numerous tests, it was evident that these highly demanding connectivity points within the air barrier assembly needed a solution that was flexible, durable and able to span irregular or unsupported joints.
Proglaze® ETA Engineered Transition Assembly was developed from Tremco to provide a solution to simplify the installation of transitions from window or curtain wall systems to wall assemblies. Mechanically attached to the wall assembly, Tremco's patented Proglaze ETA ensures a continuous, compatible seal. It provides a durable connection designed to absorb dynamic movement and wind-loading stresses without it pulling apart. The Silicone Rubber Extrusion is so flexible it can span and seal across irregular window geometries while meeting the most stringent performance requirements.
Proglaze ETA is so versatile it can be used at junctions between other assemblies within the building envelope where spanning of voids is commonplace, such as roof to wall, floor deflection joints and expansion and control joints, where a degree of movement is anticipated. This capability made this product ideal for the distinctive needs of this project, as it is uniquely designed to seal gaps that are too large to seal with a sealant and where a peel-and-stick membrane won’t withstand the movement.
Proglaze ETA was used in conjunction with ExoAir® 120 Fluid-Applied Air & Vapor Barrier and ExoAir 110 Sheet-Applied Air & Vapor Barrier at the transition areas of the building for a tested, proven compatible system with single-source accountability.
