After just two years of use, the exterior concrete paint coating on the helipad at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital was failing. Landing markings and directional identification required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) had begun to peel and fade. Additionally, Illinois early fall weather conditions had to be factored in; unpredictable weather patterns, lower temperatures and rain could make installation conditions less than ideal.
Hospital Facilities Manager Tony Pilolla turned to Tremco Roofing & Building representative John McCafferty who pulled in Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing representative Rick Cuttaia who recommended Tremco's Vulkem EWS Helipad System. Vulkem EWS is a durable, long-lasting product that has a short installation and cure time and can be applied in freezing temperatures.
The existing application was removed in just two days and completed the application of Vulkem EWS in just one day. The project required using different color topcoat materials to produce detailed markings and letterings for the helipad.
