UL Environment’s ISO 17065 accredited GREENGUARD Certification Program aims to protect human health and improve quality of life by enhancing indoor air quality and reducing people’s exposure to chemicals and other pollutants. The GREENGUARD Certification Program certifies products and materials for low chemical emissions and provides an easier way to choose healthier products and materials for indoor environments. All certified products must meet stringent chemical emissions standards based on established criteria from key public health agencies. GREENGUARD Certification is broadly recognized and accepted by sustainable building programs and building codes worldwide. More information is available at http://www.ul.com/gg.
Tremco CS&W were one of the first integrated building envelope solutions provider to achieve GREENGUARD certification for its products. More market sectors, regulatory bodies and specifiers are emphasizing the importance of IAQ, and this certification gives Tremco CS&W a distinct competitive advantage that directly benefits our customers.
GREENGUARD Gold certification (formerly known as Greenguard Children and Schools™ Certification) is globally recognized as meeting or exceeding all indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and is significantly stricter than methods mandated in most building codes and systems. It gives assurance that products affecting indoor spaces meet rigorous volatile organic emissions (VOE) limits, which contribute to healthier interiors. Achieving GREENGUARD Gold Certification backs manufacturers’ sustainability claims with empirical scientific data from an unbiased, third-party organization, UL Environment. VOCs are compounds that slowly off-gas from products after they have been manufactured or installed. This includes building materials behind the façade of structures, such as adhesives, sealants, air barriers, gaskets and tapes. VOCs from such building materials can diffuse through substrates or flow through windows or HVAC systems and affect IAQ. VOCs contribute to pollutants indoors and exceeding their chronic exposure limits can negatively impact human health. VOE limitation is required for the Collaborative for High-Performance Schools protocol and for the LEED v4 new emissions credit and is expected to be a compliance path over the next few years for the, Cal-Green Building Code, ASHRAE 189.1 and International Green Construction Code. The GREENGUARD Gold Certification standard includes health based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. In addition to limiting emissions of more than 360 VOCs and total chemical emissions, GREENGUARD Gold Certified products must also comply with requirements of the State of California’s Department of Public Health (CDPH) “Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, Version 1.1 (2010)” (also known as California Section 01350). Tremco CS&W tested products have earned the GREENGUARD Gold Certification. Additional Tremco CS&W product tests are underway.
