Transforming a building into a high-performance environment requires continuity at all the interfaces throughout the building envelope. These connections must be able to withstand maximum wind loads, building movement from thermal, seismic and moisture content changes deflection, and creep. Joints and the materials that are used to seal them must be able to support the same air pressures as the air barrier material without rupture or displacement.
The dynamic joints in building design such as joints within floors and walls, which allow for building movement, are particularly demanding connectivity points. They must be flexible, durable and able to span irregular or unsupported joints; yet, designs are being driven toward lighter structural materials, which result in even greater movement, creating greater demands on the current materials the industry uses to make the connections. Meanwhile, performance requirements are calling for an extended life of 30 years and more. Yet, how do we know if existing designs/materials will perform to the criteria we demand and expect?
The question then comes down to how the various alternatives today will perform under demanding conditions and at what point performance breaks down.
To better understand the performance of various materials available today, a Self-Adhered Membrane and Pre-engineered Silicone Materials were tested as transition materials on two different test walls at Tremco's Sustainable Building Solutions Test Facility to compare side-by-side performance. One test assembly was covered with a self-adhered air and vapor membrane and the other was covered with a fluid-applied, vapor-permeable air barrier membrane.
When pushed to determine the limits for failure, in the ExoAir 110 Assembly 1 connected with Proglaze ETA, even after exposure @ 2000 Pa (130 mph; 41.8 psf) pressure differential for 15 minutes, the system experienced no leakage. In the ExoAir 230 Assembly 2 connected with Proglaze ETA, the test was run to 1800 Pa (122.7 mph; 37.6 psf) and the system performed with no leakage. The buck assembly became damaged at this point.
Self-Adhering Membranes and Pre-engineered Silicone Sheet Material Systems (Proglaze ETA / Spectrem 1) are very different technologies. Self-adhered membranes provide an effective air and moisture barrier when fully supported. Used to bridge unsupported gaps, and exposed to various environmental conditions that create movement, a self-adhered membrane may not be the best solution. The performance results in this report document the performance capabilities of each under "real world" conditions they will be exposed to over time. When designing a high-performance building, these performance limitations must be considered in order to ensure a successful outcome.
Self-Adhering Membranes and Pre-engineered Silicone Sheet Material Systems (Proglaze ETA / Spectrem 1) are very different technologies. The performance results in this report are documented. We believe the industry must better understand how the various technologies perform. Architects, designers and consultants have choices. We are continually putting performance to the test to ensure documented performance to aid in the design of high-performance buildings.
