The New Los Angeles Cathedral is under construction. Benson Industries is involved with supplying the conventionally glazed glass on the exterior with an interior partition of alabaster stone. The alabaster comes from four different quarries in Italy. The lites of alabaster are composed of numerous rectangular pieces in differing sizes that are arranged in a predetermined pattern which requires the lites to be snugged against each other linearly into the metal glazing channel.
A custom designed 70 durometer silicone rubber spacer separates the stone from the interior metal, thus allowing the varying thickness of stone to align flush with one another. To accommodate the varying stone thicknesses, a custom silicone rubber Poly-Wej gasket was developed. This gasket needed to properly support the very fragile stone while providing the necessary support. Silicone gaskets were required after extensive testing found conventional Neoprene and EPDM rubber extrusions had the potential to stain the porous stone. Even the setting blocks needed to be silicone to prevent the migration of their protective oils and plasticizers penetrating the stone surface.
