Sustainable/green building must balance the demands of our market (customers, owners and specifiers), our environment and society. This demands that we rethink how we have traditionally done things and look at new methods and models for operation. Rather than looking at construction from the perspective of individual building products, we need to look at the total building envelope in order to impact the energy requirements to operate a building. There must be continuity throughout the building envelope to provide air and moisture management. Construction is comprised of integrated applications so the products and services that we provide must take into consideration how we integrate products and systems throughout the building envelope to ensure sustainability. We must also look at site conditions and methods designed to respond to environmental issues.

• Connectivity - Today's tie-ins or transitions from air barriers to window to curtain wall systems are frequently the source of problems when it comes to preventing air and moisture infiltration in a building. Once a building's integrity is compromised and moisture is allowed to enter, it can lead to the deterioration of envelope components, rusting and degradation of structural supports and exterior damage which may necessitate removal of the exterior cladding. In addition, up to 40% of a building's energy consumption for heating or cooling is attributable to air leakage.
